Obligatory Presupposition Triggers in Discourse - Empirical Investigations of the theories Maximize Presupposition and Obligatory Implicatures
Prof. Dr. Sigrid Beck & Prof. Dr. Gennaro Chierchia
In my dissertation I looked at two theories explaining the obligatory insertion of presupposition triggers. One of them works with mandatory implicatures, the other with the principle Maximize Presupposition. I compared the predictions of these theories for different triggers in different kinds of contexts using experimental methods.
My findings suggest that triggers should not be considered a homogeneous class when it comes to obligatory insertion. For the class of triggers including "again" and "too" I found that their insertion is related to the (obligatory) occurrence of exhaustivity implicatures.
